Laissez les bons temps roulez!

"Mei'attah" is a play on the Arabic musical term "me-attah" meaning "broken up bits of music and rhythm." It refers to the back-and-forth exchange between a melody instrument and a drumbeat. This exchange usually appears near the beginning of a song and serves as a prelude to the main portion of the music.

When we use Mei'attah, we are reflecting both the the loving exchange and interaction of our dancers with the music, as well as the wider exchange between cultures that has helped make our ecclectic synthesis of various dance forms, and the creation of a new expression, possible.
"Raqs," of course, is the Arabic word for "dance." What is commonly referred to as "bellydance" here in the West is perhaps more accurately known as "Raqs Sharki." Amusingly, "Raqs" sounds a lot like the English word "rocks"- and our troupe definitely rocks!

MISSION STATEMENT: Mei'attah Raqs is a creative dance cooperative and is dedicated to the study, practice, performance, and preservation of traditional and modern dance styles of many ethnicities, the education of the public concerning said dance styles, and the creative synthesis thereof. Mei'attah Raqs blends traditional Middle-Eastern dance styles (and it's modern variations) with modern Western dance styles and various world dance influences, creating a seamless union referred to as American Fusion bellydance.
